Chocolate Jesus

chocolatejesus.jpg

This from the BBC:

The six-foot (1.8m) sculpture, entitled "My Sweet Lord", depicts Jesus
Christ naked on the cross.

Catholic League head Bill Donohue called it "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever".

Really? Worst assault ever?

Donahue is an ass, and anyone familiar with his perpetual sense of outrage knows it. I guess in some ways I can see how Christians might be offended by something like Serrano's Piss Christ. But this piece seems tame in comparison. If the piece were shaped from doody instead of chocolate then I could understand. But to me this artist is making an important social comment about the confectionary capitalism that revolves around western religious holidays.

Regardless, Donohue and his poodles over at the Catholic League are just happy to have something to foam at the mouth about. Lord knows how hard it is for Christians in America.

I will say, though, that the gallery owner describing the timing of the piece, which opens in New York the week of Easter, as "coincidental" is idiotic.

UPDATE: The exhibit has been cancelled:

The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails about the exhibit. [Gallery creative director Matt] Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of artist Cosimo Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the decision to cancel the display.

It won't be long before the Christians don't just threaten the lives of people that threaten their "values", but actually go through with it. Let me put it this way: These people are so out of their minds with "righteous" anger that it would not surprise me one bit to see actual bombs follow these threats. Extremist Christian is the new Extremist Muslim. It's so vogue.

Obama's 1984

Great Video.

Thanks to Talking Points Memo. Also, Josh at TPM says that this video was not created by Obama's people.
